What is a reference denture?
A reference denture is a new denture designed using reference information from an existing denture. A functional impression with border molding and wash impression is a key part of the reference denture technique to ensure the optimal fit of the new denture.

In other words, the reference denture is used as a guide to produce functional impressions, record a comfortable restorative jaw relation, position tooth arches, and produce a new digital removable prosthesis.

Reference dentures can be designed both using TRIOS scans as well as scans acquired from a physical model with a lab scanner.
Key benefits of the Reference denture protocol in the treatment of edentulous patients:
- Being able to use the existing denture(s) as a tool instead of a wax rim for determining the OVD.
- Being able to use the existing denture(s) as a tool instead of a custom tray to capture a functional impression.
- Being able to transfer reference information such as midline, canine positions and smile line accurately to the new denture.
- Being able to effectively communicate change needs such as incisor exposure and tissue support based on the existing denture.
- Being able to effectively communicate patient’s wishes for their new prosthesis.
- A try-in denture (optional) can be used to check the fit, function, phonetics, and esthetics before the final reference denture delivery, but is not a mandatory step.
"It is a workflow which delivers increased patient acceptance and satisfaction, reduces postoperative adjustments, and ultimately, improves the patient experience as it requires fewer visits to the clinic." - Eric Kukucka
What is the difference between a reference denture and a copy denture?
The reference denture protocol is often confused with the copy denture protocol.
While they have some similarities the design workflows, scan protocols, and outcomes are distinctly different.
