In this article, we will go over some important information regarding Copy and Reference Dentures.
Copy Denture
What is a copy denture?
Copy dentures are a new set of dentures that are manufactured based on your existing set of dentures.
The benefit of a copy denture is that you are not taking new impressions.
Do you want to make any changes to the existing denture? if the answer is yes, then that will be a reference denture.
- Characteristics:
- Just one thing will be new, the Flange Design. (Pink tissue on the front of the denture).
- Current Fit will remain.
- Will keep existing denture teeth and anatomy: position, incisal edge, and anatomy, we cannot make the teeth look better.
- Just scan the denture itself, no bite reference is needed.

Reference Denture
The reference denture technique involves using the patient's existing dentures that they present with to fabricate their new dentures. This allows us to leverage all of the information that we already have as a starting point and improve on it instead of starting from scratch.
-
Characteristics:
- New Flange design.
- New fit using the new impression.
- New teeth, can match existing ones or can be idealized, you can let us know what you want to keep or change.
- Upper, Lower, and bite reference is needed. - Reference Denture Order setup
Object Type: Impression
After the order is created, the dental system will ask to add the upper, lower, and the wax-rim which is the new bite. (Physical model already aligned and in occlusion).
Object Type: Digital Impression
After the order is created, the dental system will ask to add the upper, lower, and bite, so we can digitally align the bite for you.
For reference dentures you might need to take into consideration the following:
- We are not able to change or fix impressions.
- We cannot add any data.
- We cannot change the bite, it is just an open and closed position.
- Specific instructions will give the best results for your case, for example, we can change the position of the teeth, if it was edge to edge we can change to centric just let us know on the instructions.
