In this article, we will go over the different Border styles available.
Borderline: This is the line drawn on the model to outline the border of the splint.
SB-9: Splint/Night Guard border placed halfway on buccal/facial surface, lingual/palatal on the gingiva
SB-7: Anterior/Posterior Straight, lingual/palatal on the gingiva
These two codes are essentially the same, as they represent our standard edge.
Both indicate a straight line passing through the middle of the vestibular surface of all teeth, as close as possible to the palatal/lingual marginal borders, maintaining a consistently straight edge.
SB-1: Draw a scalloped line, following the shape of the gingival margins, above the gingiva. Ignore undercuts.
Typically, when this code is requested, the customer polishes the excess material by hand.
This line applies only to the vestibular surface. If no additional line is specified, the SB-7 standard is used for the lingual/palatal area.
SB-2: This line applies to lingual/palatal only.
If it is not complemented with another line, in the vestibular area we will follow the standard SB-7.
We will draw the line straight, leaving a distance of at least 2 mm after the gingival margins.
SB- 3: We will draw a straight line from canine to canine, and draw the scalloped posterior line (following the shape of the gingival margins), without going too far into the undercuts, the shape of the gingival margins), without going too far into the undercuts.
This line applies only to the vestibular; if it is not complemented with another line, in the lingual/palatal area, we will follow the standard SB-7.
SB-4: We will draw a straight line from lateral to lateral, and draw the scalloped posterior line (following the shape of the gingival margins, without going too far into the undercuts, the shape of the gingival margins), without going too far into the undercuts.
This line applies only to the vestibular if it is not complemented with another line, in the lingual/palatal area, following the standard SB-7.
SB-5: We will draw the rounding with the shape of the tooth from canine to canine by the middle third, and draw the scalloped posterior line (following the shape of the gingival margins, without going too far into the undercuts).
We will draw the posterior scalloped line (following the shape of the gingival margins), without going too far into the undercuts.
This line applies only to the vestibular if it is not complemented with another line, in the lingual/palatal area, following the standard SB-7.
SB-6: We will start drawing the line through a canine in the vestibular toward the distal and follow the shape of the gingival margins (scalloped), without going too far into the undercuts, on all posterior teeth gingival margins (scalloped), without going too far into the undercuts, on all posterior teeth.
IMPORTANT: This line should ALWAYS be accompanied by SB-2 (even if not requested) to give retention and support to the splint. When we reach the other canine in the vestibule, we will turn the model and draw a straight line on the incisal edge of the incisors and finally connect to the starting point.
SB-8: We will draw a straight line covering all gingival margins of all vestibular teeth.
This line applies only to the vestibular, if not complemented with another line, in the lingual/palatal area, following the standard SB-7.
SB-10: We will draw the line so that only the cervical third is outside the splint.
This line can pass in the middle of SB-9 and SB-8.
This line applies only to the vestibular, if not complemented by another line, in the lingual/palatal area, following the standard SB-7.
SB-L: Draw the lingual/palatal borderline just anterior to the gingiva, slightly undercut and scalloped (following the shape of the gingival margins).
SB-CS: We will use a colored Scan to determine the location of the edges.
SB-D: We will draw a straight line in the vestibular: it should go 2 mm from the incisal edge in the anterior part and 1 mm from the cusps in the posterior part.
