In this article, we will explain the Dual Scan Protocol
For the Dual Scan Protocol, there are 2 different CBCT scans needed.
- The first one is of the patient wearing the denture/transparent acrylic duplicate of the denture, with radiopaque markers. We suggest 4-5 markers evenly distributed on the denture, on buccal, and lingual.
- The second CBCT scan is of the denture alone (with the markers in the exact same position as they were when the patient was wearing them). The denture needs to be scanned, preferably, on a polystyrene surface.
Please be sure to scan arches individually if it will be a dual arch case.
Radiopaque markers are used to capture the best scans possible for our Doctors to design a surgical guide.
Suremark radiopaque markers are what we recommend for scanning. Below is the link to the Suremark website if you are looking to purchase those markers.

We recommend using at least four (preferably five) commercially available radiopaque markers, ideally with spheres of 2-4 mm in diameter but not larger than 5 mm. The radiopaque markers should be evenly distributed across the denture but not placed closer than 4mm to each other and not in a straight line.
